New Delhi, Jan 30 : The Cabinet Committee on Security headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved two major projects worth an estimated Rs 10,200 crore for the procurement of weapons for the indigenously developed Pinaka multiple launch rocket system.

The high-explosive rocket weapon is being procured at a cost of Rs 5,700 crore, while the area denial munitions are being procured at a cost of Rs 4,500 crore. This will complement the 11 lakh strong force, which has already been commissioned for 10 Pinaka regiments.

The high-explosive rocket weapons can hit targets up to 45 km away, while the denial munitions can hit targets up to 37 km away. These are capable of targeting multiple bomblets and are capable of countering anti-tank and anti-personnel mines.

Nagpur-based private sector Solar Group and state-owned Munitions India Limited will jointly produce these weapons in a 60:40 ratio. The agreement is expected to be signed in the next few days, sources said.
