Ahmedabad: A 23-year-old cricketer named Deerdh Patel has died in the Air India plane crash that took place in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aircraft crashed moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. A total of 274 people, including 241 passengers and crew, died in the crash.

Young cricketer Deerdh Patel was a player of Leeds Moderns Cricket Club. He played 20 matches in 2024, scoring 312 runs and taking 29 wickets. In addition to cricket, he also completed a master's degree in artificial intelligence (AI). Dirgh Patel, who was a well-known cricketer, wanted to register as an English resident player.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dirgh Patel. He was the brother of Kritik Patel, a Deergh Pool Cricket Club player who passed away,” Leeds Moderns Cricket Club said. Leeds Moderns Club will observe a minute’s silence this weekend. The league has expressed its condolences to Kritik and the Patel family.
