Bengaluru, April 25: Padma Shri awardee and renowned scientist K. Kasturirangan passed away today. Family sources said that Kasturirangan (84) passed away this morning at his residence in the city.

K. Kasturirangan, who made unparalleled achievements in the field of space, served as ISRO Chairman from 1994 to 2003. During this period, he played a significant role in developing and successfully launching several instruments of GSLV.

Kasturirangan's role in the Indian space program was distinguished and he had gained great expertise in satellite technology and space exploration. He had received a series of awards including India's highest honours, the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, for his lifetime achievements.

After retiring from ISRO, he engaged himself in scientific and educational activities. He also worked on several government committees and did many memorable works including improving the facilities of the citizens.

Born on 24 October 1940 in Erakulam, Kerala, to Krishnaswamy Iyer and Vishalakshi. Kasturirangan settled in Nallapalli Agraharam in Palakkad district when his parents migrated to Kerala from Tamil Nadu. After retiring from ISRO, he settled in Bangalore.
