Bhopal: The use of calcium carbide guns went viral during the Diwali festival. Currently, children in the capital of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal, who were using them, have lost their eyes. Some others have been seriously injured. It is said that the children aged 8 to 14 are still undergoing treatment at a Bhopal hospital. Several have already been given first aid by the hospital staff. However, hospital doctors have expressed concern about this big disaster for children.

What is a 'plastic pipe gun'?

These special guns are made crudely using plastic pipes, gas lighters and calcium carbide without any scientific basis. When calcium carbide is placed inside the pipe and water is added to it, it produces an explosive gas called acetylene. When it is ignited with a lighter, it explodes with a loud noise.

The force of this explosion breaks the plastic pipes into pieces and moves very fast like bullet fragments. This causes severe injuries to the eyes, face and skin of children. It was warned earlier not to use it. However, this incident occurred because they thought it would be available for less money.

The parents of the injured children are expressing extreme anger against the authorities who have not taken any action despite the fact that such dangerous guns are being sold in the market. The families are complaining that the complete negligence of the authorities is the reason for this condition of our children.

Despite the ban on gun sale, sale

On October 18, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav had clearly instructed the District Collectors and Police Officers across the state to strictly prevent the sale of such devices. However, disregarding the CM's directive, these carbide guns were sold in local markets during Diwali. After the case came to light, the district administration has taken strict action against the illegal manufacture and sale of carbide guns, CMHO Sharma said.

``Such deadly guns should not be sold in the market in the first place. "Strict action should be taken against those who manufacture and sell them. Children should be compensated for their medical expenses," said a parent.
