Powai, Mumbai – June 13 Residents of Jal Vayu Vihar in Powai are mourning the tragic loss of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a long-time resident of the society, who was among the victims of the devastating Air India Flight 171 crash near Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025

Captain Sabharwal was commanding the Boeing 787 en-route from Ahmedabad to London and after short takeoff the aircraft crashed. This has resulted in the death of 241 individuals on board along with former CM of Gujarat Vijay Rupani and as plane crashed on  B.J. Medical College boys hostel, over 60 medical students are hurt and atleast killed 5 students. In this crash only one passanger British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, survived.

Captain Sabharwal's family has deep roots in the aviation industry. His father, now in his mid-80s, served as a Director with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in Kolkata. His elder sister is married and resides elsewhere, and her two children have also pursued careers as pilots.

The tragic incident has cast a pall of sorrow over the Jal Vayu Vihar community, known for its close-knit residents, many of whom are retired armed forces personnel and aviation professionals. Neighbors expressed deep concern for the elderly father, now left alone to cope with the devastating loss.

“He was such a bright and promising young man,” said a resident. “It’s heartbreaking for all of us. We’re trying to support his father in whatever way we can.”
