Mangalore:  The Women’s Cell, in association with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore, organized a remarkable celebration on the occasion of International Women’s Day. The event, themed ‘Accelerate Action’, emphasized the importance of taking meaningful steps toward gender equality and honored the distinguished change maker, Dr. Rita Noronha, recipient of the Suvarna Mahotsava Prashasthi Award 2024.

The event began with a soulful prayer led by Timothy and his team, followed by a short video presentation showcasing the incredible journey of Dr. Rita Noronha in social work and community service. 

The welcome address was delivered by Asst. Prof. Veena B K, Head of the BSW Department. 

The ceremonial lighting of the lamp symbolized the enlightenment and empowerment of women followed by the insightful speeches by Dr. Jacinta D’Souza and Kishore Attavar, who emphasized the importance of collective action in fostering an inclusive and equitable society.

The reading of the citation detailing the outstanding contributions of Dr. Rita Noronha to social causes by Asst. Prof. Anusuya Kamath, Chairperson of the Women’s Cell. This was followed by a grand felicitation ceremony, where the dignitaries honored Dr. Rita Noronha for her relentless efforts in social work.

In her address, Dr. Rita Noronha expressed gratitude for the recognition and shared her vision of a more just and empowered society. Her speech was an inspiring call to action, urging everyone to be proactive in creating meaningful change.

A highlight of the event was a Dance Drama performed by Second-year BSW students, portraying the struggles and triumphs of women in society, in line with the theme ‘Accelerate Action.’ 

Furthering the commitment to women’s empowerment, the event featured a special guest lecture on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment Committee (POSH) Act by Dr. Sapna, Professor, Department of Social Work, Alva’s College, Moodabidri. The session provided valuable insights into ensuring safety and dignity in workplaces. Asst. Prof. Ramya B introduced the esteemed resource person.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Saritha D’Souza, IQAC Coordinator.
