New Delhi, Apr 7: The domestic cooking gas LPG price on Monday was hiked by a steep Rs 50 per cylinder across India and CNG by Re 1 per kg, while the government raised taxes on petrol and diesel to shore up its revenues.
The increase in cooking gas price will be for the Ujjawala – poor beneficiaries who got LPG connection free of cost – and general users, and will be effective from April 8 and has been necessitated due to the rise in input cost, Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said.
This increase follows a recent price reduction on April 1, where oil marketing companies had provided some relief by lowering the price of 19-kg commercial LPG cylinders by Rs 41. In the national capital, Delhi, the revised retail selling price for commercial cylinders currently stands at Rs 1,762 per cylinder.
India relies on imports for approximately 60% of its domestic LPG consumption, making the country's LPG prices susceptible to fluctuations in the international market.
As of March 1 this year, the number of beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) had reached 10.33 crore, while the total number of active domestic LPG consumers in India stood at 32.94 crore, as per information presented in Parliament during the recently concluded session.
Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi informed the Lok Sabha in a written response that while the average international price of LPG saw a significant increase of 63% from US$ 385/MT in July 2023 to US$ 629/MT in February 2025, the effective price for PMUY consumers for domestic LPG was reduced by 44% from ?903 in August 2023 to Rs 503 in February 2025.
Prior to this latest hike, the retail selling price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder in Delhi was Rs 803, with PMUY consumers receiving a subsidy of Rs 300 per cylinder. The price of 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinders had remained stable since August 2024.
