Dhaka: A total of 19 people, including 16 students, two teachers and a pilot, were killed when a fighter jet crashed into a college building on the outskirts of the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka on Monday.
The deceased pilot has been identified as Lieutenant Muhammad Tauqir Islam, while two teachers also died in the incident. More than 100 people were injured in the incident.
Bangladesh's interim government chief Muhammad Yunus expressed deep sorrow and grief over the incident. He posted on X, “The loss to the Air Force, students, parents, teachers and staff of Milestone School and College in this accident is incalculable. This is a moment of immense sorrow for the country.”
The aircraft that crashed has been identified as an F-7BGI, an advanced version of China’s J-7 fighter jet.
The fighter jet, which took off at 1.06 pm, hit the college building where the students were staying, a fire service official told the Associated Press.
