Mangaluru: The Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI) celebrated National Library Day with fervour and intellectual engagement at a well-attended programme held in the Decennial Memorial Hall on Saturday, August 23.
The event was presided over by Rev. Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo, Director, FMCI, and featured Dr Mahabaleshwar Rao, Associate Professor and Deputy Chief Librarian at the KMC Health Sciences Library, MAHE, Manipal, as Chief Guest.
Observed annually in honour of Dr S.R. Ranganathan, the father of Library Science in India, National Library Day acknowledges the vital role libraries play in education, research, and the dissemination of knowledge. The celebration aimed to promote reading habits, lifelong learning, and to highlight the evolving role of libraries in the digital era.
Organized by the Central Library of Father Muller Medical College, the programme was spearheaded by Dr Janet Dotty Lobo, Chief Librarian, along with her dedicated team. The event brought together staff and students from across FMCI’s educational institutions.
A key highlight of the celebration was the inter-collegiate quiz competition ‘MULLER LIBER – 2025’, conducted by Dr Anil Shetty, Professor and Head of the Department of Paediatrics, who served as the Quiz Master. The competition drew participation from 30 colleges across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, showcasing a vibrant display of knowledge and competitive spirit.
In his keynote address, Dr Rao emphasized the transformative impact of technology on libraries. He spoke about integrating digital tools, apps, and software into library services to enhance user experience and accessibility. Applauding FMCI for hosting a national-level quiz, he praised the professionalism and quality of the event.
Presiding over the function, Rev. Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo reflected on the relevance of libraries in today’s digital world. “Libraries remain sanctuaries of knowledge, contemplation, and self-development,” he said, noting that despite the rise of digital media, libraries continue to play a crucial role in nurturing academic and personal growth.
Formal proceedings included a welcome address and introduction of dignitaries by Prof. Dr John J.S. Martis, Chairman, Library Committee. The announcement of winners and acknowledgements was delivered by Dr Janet Dotty Lobo, while the vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Agnes, Vice Principal, Father Muller School and College of Nursing.
The event was compered by Dr Michelle Fernandes, Professor and Head, Department of Dermatology, and Dr Sri Lakshmi Prabhu, Associate Professor, Department of General Medicine.
Distinguished guests present on the dais included Rev. Dr Micheal Santhumayor, Administrator, FMMC, FMCOAHS, FMCOP, and Dr Antony Sylvan Dsouza, Dean, Father Muller Medical College.
The celebration concluded with a reaffirmation of FMCI’s dedication to academic excellence, intellectual growth, and service to humanity.
