Katmandu: Eight people were killed and 10 others were injured when a jeep carrying 18 passengers fell into a 700-feet ditch in Nepal's Karnali province, police said on Saturday.

The accident occurred on Friday night in the Zharmare area of Bafikot in Rukum West district, about 500 km west of Kathmandu.

The jeep was heading from Khalanga in Musikot towards Sailikhadi area of Athbiskat municipality when the accident occurred. Police said initial investigation revealed that the accident was caused by speeding.

Seven people died on the spot and one died while receiving treatment at a local hospital, police said. All the deceased were youths aged between 15 and 30. Police said that ten other injured people are undergoing treatment at the Rukum District Hospital in Sale.
