Karachi:  Around 216 prisoners escaped from a Karachi jail in Pakistan during a chaos during the transfer. One prisoner was killed and three security personnel and a prison guard were injured in the incident that took place last night in Karachi's Malir jail.

According to prison officials, more than 80 prisoners have been recaptured. Officials said that a series of earthquakes have hit Karachi in the last 24 hours.

More than 600 prisoners were taken out of their barracks when the earthquake struck, said Jail Superintendent Arshad Shah. Shah said that taking advantage of this, 216 prisoners managed to escape amid the chaos.

He said that more than 135 prisoners are absconding and search operations are underway. Law enforcement officials have launched a joint operation to track down the remaining escapees. Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanzar called the incident the most serious jailbreak in recent years.
