Sudan: At least 1,000 people have been killed in a landslide in the Marra Mountains in the country's west, a rebel group said. The landslide, triggered by days of heavy rain, has flattened much of the village of Tarasin. The United Nations and other regional and international organizations have appealed for humanitarian aid.

Many residents of North Darfur state had taken refuge in the Marra Mountains after fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Governor Minnie Minnawi, who is allied with Darfur's army, called the landslide a humanitarian catastrophe.

The civil war that broke out in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the RSF has plunged the country into famine and led to accusations of genocide in the West Darfur region.
The death toll from the civil war varies significantly, but last year a US official estimated that 150,000 people have died since the war began in 2023. About 12 million people have fled their homes.
