Mangalore : Centre for Environmental Studies of Yenepoya University undertook a sapling planting campaign during the months of July and August under its Green Community Project headed by Dr. Bhagya B. Sharma. The objective of the programme was to create awareness of environment and encourage people’s participation in preserving the ecology. School children and teachers as well as local citizens, community leaders and government officials were invited to participate in the campaign. Yenepoya Medical and Ayurveda college students too participated.
List of places where saplings were planted:
- At Belma Panchayath saplings of Neem, Mahagoni, Mandara and Hole dasavala were planted in Panchayath campus on 21.06.2019. Faculty from Environment centre along with Naveen Hegde - Panchayath Development Officer, Vijaya Krishnappa - President, Abdul Sattar - Vice President, Vani – Secretary and Panchayath faculty participated in the programme. The event was coordinated by Kamal from panchayath.
- At Hira Primary school and Degree College saplings of Neem, Mandara and Hole dasavala, Rosewood, Kokum, Red Sandalwood, Golden Shower, Badam and Indian blackberry were planted on 05.07.2019. The programme was attended by Abdul Kareem, the Secretary of management of Hira Educational Institutions, Mustak member Nagara Sabha, Bharati, Principal Degree College, teachers and students.
- At Munoor Govt. School, students planted saplings of mandara, badam and neem in the school campus on 10.07.2019. Vegetable seeds of cucumber, cowpea, brinjal, bitter gourd, snake gourd, bottle gourd and Vermicompost was given to Sharada, Principal for developing a vegetable garden in the school.
- Saplings of lime, kokum and mango were planted in the school area by the students . . Shakuntala Shetty Principal, staff and students participated in the event.
- At Mangala Seva Trust, Pavoor, 150 saplings of Red sandalwood, Jackfruit, Badam, Indian blackberry, Neem, Pride of India, Rosewood, Golden shower, Mandara, Mahagoni and wild Jack were planted by the students of Yenepoya Ayurveda Medical College. The programme was supported by Dr. P. Ananthakrishna Bhat, Managing Trustee, Mangala Seva Trust.
- In a park near Housing Board, Kotekar Panchayath, Deralakatte, around 50 saplings of Jackfruit, Badam, Nerale, Pride of India, Rosewood, Golden shower, Mandara, Mahagoni, and Wild Jack were planted by I MBBS students of Yenepoya Medical College . Purnakala, CEO, Kotekar Pattana Panchayath planted saplings along with the students. Praveen Kumar, Hospital Superintendent, Yenepoya Medical College Hospital also participated in the programme.
