Mysore, Dec 26: A massive explosion took place in front of the palace in Mysore city on Thursday evening, killing one person and seriously injuring four others.
The incident took place near the Jayamartanda Gate in front of the palace. A helium balloon was being sold nearby and its cylinder exploded. A balloon vendor standing nearby died on the spot. Four others sustained serious injuries. The injured have been admitted to K.R. Hospital, sources said.
A large number of people had come to see the Mysore Palace during the Christmas holidays. Many who came out after seeing the palace were buying from the putbath vendors. There was a flying balloon vendor in the same putbath, and there was also a helium balloon cylinder on his bicycle. The explosion occurred suddenly, injuring those standing nearby. The incident occurred at 8.30 pm. Police immediately reached the spot and shifted the injured to the hospital.

The deceased balloon trader is a man aged between 40 and 42 years old and has not been identified. Four people who had come from different towns to see the palace were seriously injured. Of these, Lakshmi from Bengaluru was seriously injured, Manjula from Nanjangud suffered a head injury, Kotresh Gutte from Ranibennur and Shaheena Shabbir from Kolkata suffered leg injuries, police sources said.
