Pune, May 30: Police on Thursday arrested Dr. Ajay Tavare, former medical superintendent of Pune's Sassoon General Hospital, in connection with a kidney transplant scam that took place at a leading private hospital in Pune, officials said.
Tavare, who was arrested last year on charges of tampering with the boy's blood sample in the Porsche car accident case driven by a 17-year-old boy in Pune's Kalyani Nagar, has now been arrested in a kidney transplant ring and is in the Yerwada Central Jail.
The city crime branch has now taken Tavare into custody in connection with a kidney transplant ring that took place at Ruby Hall Clinic, a leading private hospital here, in 2022, police said.
"We have taken Dr. Ajay Tavare into custody in the kidney graft case and he will be produced before the court today," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Nikhil Pingale.
Dr. Ajay Tavare headed the regional authority committee that approved the kidney transplant in 2022.
In May 2022, the Pune police registered a case against 15 people, including the managing trustee of Ruby Hall Clinic and some of its employees, in connection with the alleged irregularities during a kidney transplant surgery in March that year.
