Mysore, Aug 05: A fire broke out at the municipal corporation's waste processing unit, destroying 50 tonnes of waste. In addition, machinery worth Rs 40 lakhs in the processing unit was gutted.
The incident took place at the zero waste processing unit in the city's Old Kesare. The fire broke out in the processing unit and spread everywhere. Passers-by immediately informed the fire brigade and the police.

The fire brigade personnel who arrived at the spot after learning about the matter, conducted a continuous operation for three hours and controlled the fire and averted further damage. Protest by locals
Due to the fire, thick smoke covered the unit, creating an unbearable atmosphere in the surrounding area, and local residents protested and demanded that the unit be evacuated immediately. During this, a verbal altercation also took place between the corporation officials and the locals. Meanwhile, the police present at the scene controlled the situation. Corporation officials including Corporation Health Officer Dr. Venkatesh arrived.
Possibility of miscreants setting fire
There is a possibility that miscreants set fire to the waste treatment unit in Kesare, and a complaint has been made to the Metagalli police station in this regard. The fire has been completely controlled, said Corporation Health Officer Dr. N.P. Venkatesh.
Madesh, the president of Siddalingapura Gram Panchayat, said that there is no fire protection system in the waste treatment unit, at least there is no water facility here, and the unit should be moved to another location immediately.
