Every year, millions of Indians wait to get their organs donated, hoping to find a donor who can save their life. Donating these organs can save someone from death.
Brain death or brain death is a condition in which a person's brain stops functioning completely. But many organs like the heart and other organs continue to function with the help of machines. In such a situation, organ donation can save many lives. According to a report, a person who is brain dead can save the lives of nine people by donating various organs. These include the heart, kidneys, liver, lungs, pancreas and eyes.

How does brain death occur?
It usually occurs after a serious injury or illness when the blood supply to the brain is blocked or the brain starts to swell inside the skull.
This could be a traumatic head injury, stroke, or prolonged cardiac arrest. These traumatic events cause the brain to lose oxygen, lose blood, or begin to swell to the point where it can no longer recover.

How is someone declared brain dead?
In California, two separate doctors independently perform a series of standardized tests to determine whether or not the brain is functioning at any level. If both doctors find that the patient is unresponsive, the patient is declared dead.
Can you recover from brain death?
No, a brain-dead patient cannot recover. The body can continue to breathe with mechanical support, but eventually, with continued support, both breathing and the heart will stop. Brain death is not the same as being in a coma.
The latter two are medical conditions in which a person in a coma may show brain function even though they are unconscious. However, medically and legally, brain death is its own unique diagnosis from which a person cannot recover.
When is the best time to donate organs
When it comes to organ donation after brain death, the best time to donate organs is immediately after brain death. Doctors can determine which organs are suitable for donation through testing. Family consent is required throughout this process.
Only if the family agrees, doctors can remove the organ and transplant it to another person in need. A person can save many lives by donating organs.
