Drone attack on airport: Two injured, Azerbaijan summons Iranian ambassador

Baku: Iran summoned the ambassador to Azerbaijan today after two people were injured in a drone attack on an airport and a school.

Around noon, two drones flew from Iran towards the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhichevan. It borders Iran and is separated from Armenia, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“One drone fell on the terminal building of Nakhichevan airport, while the other drone fell near a school building in the village of Shekarabad,” the ministry said. The airport was damaged and two civilians were injured.

Necessary retaliatory measures are being prepared to protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our country and ensure the safety of citizens and civilian infrastructure. The Baku Defense Ministry warned that the attack would not go unanswered. The ministry said it had summoned the Iranian ambassador in Baku to lodge a strong protest over the attack, which violates the rules and principles of international law and contributes to rising tensions in the region.

Iran has long been concerned that Azerbaijan’s territory could be used to launch attacks by Israel, Azerbaijan’s ally and major arms supplier. Last June, Azerbaijan assured Iran that it would not allow its territory to be used for attacks against Tehran after Israel launched a large-scale attack on Iran. Iran has a large Azerbaijani population, with about 10 million Iranians out of a population of about 83 million.
