Heavy snowfall at Zojila Pass on Srinagar-Leh Highway: Seven dead, five injured

Srinagar, March 28: Heavy snowfall on Friday at Zojila Pass on Srinagar-Leh Highway in Jammu and Kashmir, killing seven people and injuring five others, resulted in multiple passenger vehicles colliding.

Four passenger vehicles plying on the pass got stuck in the avalanche at around 2.45 pm. A rescue operation was launched as the vehicles were buried under the snow, a senior police officer said.

Rescue teams rushed to the spot and started an operation to pull out the victims from the debris of the heavy snowfall and seven bodies have been recovered.

The official said that the five injured have been shifted to a hospital in Drass. Two persons are reported missing. It is not yet clear whether they crossed the Drass side, he said.

Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena said he has instructed the Deputy Commissioner and SSP of Kargil to reach the spot and supervise the relief work.

He is personally monitoring the situation and has instructed all government agencies, including the Disaster Relief Forces and BRO, to take action, he posted on social media.
