Jammu and Kashmir: Army vehicle falls into 200-feet deep gorge; 10 personnel killed

Srinagar: Ten personnel were killed and seven others injured when an armoured military vehicle skidded and fell into a 200-feet deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on Thursday.

The army vehicle carrying 17 people, while on its way to a high post, lost control and fell into a 200-feet deep gorge at Khanni Top on the Bhaderwah-Chamba road.

The army, police and local residents launched a rescue operation immediately after the accident and shifted the injured soldiers to the hospital.

Initially, the bodies of four soldiers were recovered from the spot and 13 were shifted to a nearby army hospital. Some of the seriously injured soldiers were airlifted to Udhampur Military Hospital for further treatment. Later, seven more personnel died, taking the death toll to 10, official sources said.

Senior government officials and army officers have rushed to the accident site and are assessing the situation.
