Bantwal: St Thomas the Apostle Church, Nirkan witnessed a day of joy and celebration on Sunday, 15 February 2026, community gathered to honour Most Rev. Edward Baretto on his appointment as Coadjutor Bishop of the Darjeeling Diocese. The faithful came together to extend their heartfelt wishes, prayers, and support for his pastoral mission.







At 9:15 am, the day began with a warm floral welcome accorded to the Bishop by the parish priest, members of the Parish Pastoral Council, parishioners, and his family members. This was followed by a solemn thanksgiving Eucharistic celebration presided over by Most Rev. Edward Baretto. The Holy Mass was concelebrated by Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of the Mangalore Diocese, and Most Rev. Stephen Lepcha, along with several other priests, filling the church with prayerful gratitude and joyful hymns among the faithful.











Later, a felicitation programme was held at the St. Thomas Church Hall, Nirkan, beginning with a graceful prayer dance by the parish children. The Bishop was first felicitated on behalf of the parish community. Various groups then came forward to convey their wishes. The parish choir led a heartfelt wishing song in his honour, followed by felicitations from members of St. Antony Ward, his Baretto family, and several other parish groups, who extended their greetings and prayers.
















On this occasion, Most Rev. Stephen Lepcha, Bishop of the Darjeeling Diocese; Rev. Fr. Victor D’Souza, Vicar Forane of Bantwal Deanery; Rev. Fr. Anil Roshan Lobo, Parish Priest; Austin Lobo, Vice President of the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC); Shanthi Veigas, Secretary of the PPC; and Stany Lobo, Coordinator of Commissions of Nirkan Church, were present and took part in the felicitation programme of Coadjutor Bishop Most Rev. Edward Baretto.
Austin Lobo, Vice President of the PPC, welcomed the gathering, while Jayesh Baretto from bishop’s family delivered the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Henvil Walder and Meleena Crasta.
The celebration reflected the unity, pride, and deep affection of the parish community, who assured their continued prayers for Bishop Edward Baretto as he carries out his shepherding mission
At the end meal was served to all who were part of the celebration.
