More than 300 journalists laid off: Will Lewis resigns as CEO of The Washington Post amid outcry

Washington, Feb 09: Will Lewis, CEO and publisher of The Washington Post, has resigned from his position.

There was outrage over the firing of more than 300 journalists (about a third of the staff). It is learnt that Will Lewis has resigned from his position.

Will Lewis, who had said that this was the right time to ensure the sustainable future of the newspaper, had laid off more than 300 journalists from the newspaper. Following this, there was strong anger from staff and readers about the management’s attitude.

Lewis has resigned from his position in the wake of this development. Lewis’ resignation is effective immediately, and the paper’s chief financial officer (CFO) Jeff D’Onofrio has been named interim CEO.

Lewis’ two-year tenure, which began in 2024, has been marked by controversy and attempts to fix financial losses. Jeff D’Onofrio previously served as CEO of Tumblr.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post Guild (Union) welcomed Lewis’ resignation, and is pressuring Bezos to immediately reverse the recent layoffs of more than 300 staff or sell the paper to the right investor
