Puttur: Golden Reunion Marks 50 Years of 1976 BA Batch at St Philomena College (Autonomous)

Puttur, March 31: In a heartwarming celebration of memory, legacy, and lifelong bonds, the 1976 Bachelor of Arts (BA) final batch of St Philomena College (Autonomous) reunited on campus to commemorate 50 years since their graduation. The “Golden Jubilee Reunion” brought together senior alumni in a deeply nostalgic gathering that blended reminiscence with reverence.

The event, held within the college premises, stood as a tribute not only to enduring friendships but also to the formative influence of the institution. Alumni fondly revisited their college days from half a century ago, recalling with pride the disciplined guidance of former principals Rev. Fr Serao and Rev. Fr Henry Castellino, along with hostel warden Rev. Fr. Lawrence Mendonca. Their mentorship, attendees noted, played a pivotal role in shaping their lives.

A highlight of the occasion was the felicitation of two respected former staff members: retired Hindi professor Vasanthi Seetharam Gowda and Norbert Correa, who had served in the college library. Both were honoured by the alumni in recognition of their dedicated service during their student years.

Delivering the keynote address, the college correspondent, Rev. Fr Lawrence Mascarenhas, lauded the alumni for their continued attachment to their alma mater. “It is truly commendable that even after 50 years, former students come together to celebrate their roots and reconnect with their institution,” he remarked.

The current principal, Rev. Dr Anthony Prakash Monteiro, and vice principal Dr Vijay Kumar Moleyar were present on the occasion and extended their best wishes to the gathering, acknowledging the legacy carried forward by the alumni. Shantha Kumari paid a solemn tribute to departed classmates and teachers, honouring their memory with reverence.

The success of the reunion was attributed to the efforts of organisers Chidananda Nayak and Vaman Ubar. The programme was compered by alumni Dr K. N. Adiga and Rita Menezes. Advocate Keshav Bhat welcomed, Sampath Kumar proposed vote of thanks and prayer was led by Mary Lobo, Vinnie D’Mello, and Rita Menezes.

Office bearers of the college’s alumni association were also present and actively contributed to the event’s organisation. The ceremony began on a vibrant note, with students performing traditional chende drumming, ceremoniously escorting guests and alumni into the auditorium.

More than a reunion, the Golden Jubilee celebration served as a poignant reminder of the timeless bond between teachers and students, and the enduring spirit of an institution that continues to inspire generations.
