Sabarimala gold theft case: Former TDB member Shankar Das arrested

Thiruvananthapuram: The SIT investigating the Sabarimala gold theft case on Wednesday arrested former TDB member KP Shankar Das.

A former Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) member has been arrested from a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, in two cases related to the theft of gold plating on the temple’s sanctum sanctorum door and doorkeeper idols, sources said.

His arrest comes after the Kerala High Court questioned why Das has not been arrested yet in these cases. Das is the 12th person to be arrested in the two cases. Sources said he is likely to be produced before the court on Thursday for remand.

The SIT had recently arrested Kandararu Rajeev, the chief priest of the temple, in the same case.

Kandararu was arrested based on the statements of the main accused Unnikrishnan Pati and former Travancore Devaswom Board president A Padmakumar. Now, former TDB member Das has been arrested.

Sources said that more people are likely to be arrested in the case.
