Manila, Oct. 10: A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines early this morning, with a potential for a tsunami. The quake struck about 62 kilometers (38 miles) southeast of Manay town in Davao Oriental province at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu said that tsunami waves were possible within 300 kilometers (186 miles) of the epicenter.

It said waves of up to 3 meters (10 feet) higher than normal were possible along some Philippine coasts near the quake, and smaller waves were possible in Indonesia and Palau.
The Philippines is still recovering from the September 30 earthquake. A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the central province of Cebu, particularly in Bogo City and surrounding towns, killing 74 people. Thousands were evacuated.
The Philippines, one of the world's most disaster-prone countries, is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The archipelago is hit by typhoons every year.
