Punjab, Oct 17: Punjab DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar, who had made a name for himself as an efficient officer, has been arrested by the CBI in a bribery case. He has been arrested red-handed on the charge that he had demanded a bribe of Rs 8 lakh to close a criminal case against a businessman and to avoid any further problems with the business.

A luxury car key, diamonds, gold, and installment money were seized from the DIG's house.

Policeman caught on a businessman's complaint

An FIR was registered against Akash Batta, an iron and steel trader, in a case of theft of iron and steel products. The police officer had demanded a bribe of Rs 8 lakh from him to close the case. It is said that the DIG was caught while accepting a bribe of Rs 8 lakh through a middleman.

CBI shocked after finding IPS assets

The CBI officials who conducted a raid at Harcharan Singh's residence have recovered Rs 5 crore in cash, 1.5 kg of gold jewellery, 22 expensive watches, keys of an Isha Ramo Audi car and a Mercedes car, locker keys, 40 litres of imported liquor, a pistol, a revolver and a double-barrel gun, the police said.

The CBI police have also seized Rs 21 lakh from a middleman named Krishna, who had done the bribe deal. The CBI police conducted a search at the DGI's house overnight. They said that the arrested will be produced before the court today.

DIG who was an efficient officer

DIG Harcharan Singh Bullar was known as an efficient officer. He has worked in various posts till now. He had fought a big fight against the drug mafia. After this campaign, he was appointed as DIG. However, his illegality is currently being questioned.

Bhullar is a 2009 batch IPS officer. He had earlier served as SSP Mohali and DIG Patiala Range. He was transferred to Ropar Range on November 27, 2024.
