Belgaum, Oct 17: Police have busted a huge fake currency printing network in the state and seized fake currency worth Rs 1 crore.
Maharashtra Police has busted a huge fake currency network operating near the Karnataka-Maharashtra border and seized fake currency worth Rs 1 crore.
Acting on specific intelligence information, a special police team from Gandhi Chowk police station in Miraj found fake currency notes of Rs 500 denomination on the Maharashtra border, about 15 km from Kagawad in Belgaum taluk.
During the operation, the officers who conducted a quick operation arrested five accused involved in printing and circulating fake currency notes.
Sources said that a driver working in a mobile police station in Maharashtra is also among the arrested. During the raid, the police also seized a car, printing machines, special paper and other equipment used to print fake currency.
The investigation has now expanded to the border areas of Sangli, Kolhapur and Belgaum districts to unearth a vast network involved in the fake currency trade. More arrests are likely as the probe into the network's cross-border links and distribution routes continues, officials said.
