Dhaka: A fire broke out at the cargo wing of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka on Saturday, suspending all flights.

According to officials, the fire broke out near Gate 8 at around 2:30 pm today, with thick smoke covering the entire airport.

Nine fire brigades were initially deployed to control the fire. Fifteen fire engines from other units have reached the spot, said fire services spokesman Talha bin Jashim.

"Due to a fire in a cargo plane, the entire airport has been engulfed in thick smoke and all flight services from Dhaka International Airport have been suspended as a precautionary measure," Biman Bangladesh Airlines spokesperson Kausar Mahmood said.

"All our flights have been confirmed safe. No casualties or injuries have been reported," an airport spokesperson was quoted as saying by The Daily Star.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, the Fire Service and two fire brigades of the Bangladesh Air Force are also involved in the firefighting operation, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

Two teams of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have also taken part in the rescue operation.
