Bengaluru, Dec 10: Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Union Minister for External Affairs S. M. Krishna passed away today.  He was 91 years-old. He breathed his last on Tuesday, December 10.

He served as Karnataka’s Chief Minister from 1999 to 2004, playing a pivotal role in transforming Bengaluru into a global IT hub.

S. M. Krishna was admitted to Vaidehi Hospital for treatment of age-related health issues. After developing a lung infection, he was later transferred to Manipal Hospital.

S. M. Krishna served as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from December 1989 to January 1993.

In March 2017, S. M. Krishna, who had been a prominent leader in the Congress Party, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Before retiring from active politics, he actively participated in the 2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election campaign.
