Vadodara, July 09: Nine people died and many are missing after the 'Gambhir' bridge connecting Vadodara and Anand collapsed in Gujarat's Vadodara district. Several vehicles fell into the river. The video shows the broken bridge and a truck stuck on the end of the bridge.

Considering the volume of traffic on the bridge, the CM had approved a new bridge worth Rs 212 crore three months ago. The design and tender work for the new bridge had already begun. After the incident, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel immediately sent the chief engineer, bridge design team and experts to the site and ordered them to submit a detailed report.

The construction of the Gambhir bridge began in 1981 and was opened for public use in 1985. In 2017, the Congress had demanded a ban on entry of heavy vehicles due to the deteriorating condition of the bridge.
