NEW DELHI: The first human trial of Covaxin, the country's first vaccine against Covid-19, was approved by the Drug Controller General of India DCGI for the Hyderabad-based vaccine manufacturer Bharat Biotech.

The first human trial will be soon done in Kunda Nagar Belgavi in Rekha hospital and also soon in country's 12 institutions.

The Board of Indian Medical Research (ICMR) has said that all tests should be expedited for immediate use of the vaccine. It is also suggested that it be released to the market within 15 months if the trial is successful.

The human clinical trial is approved by the DCGI after the company submits the results of the Preliminary Study (Pre-Clinical Studies) and safety and immune response. Against this backdrop, the trial will be held in 12 hospitals in the country.

"The drug will be made available to the public only after the impact of the trial on about 100 to 200 people. The trial will begin from next week," said Dr. Amit Bhate said.
