Mangaluru, Oct 26: Edwin Joseph Francis DSouza famous writer in the Konkani writer Novelist and short story writer was born in Mangalore in 1948 as the only child to Late Martin DSouza and Stella DSouza.

His first writing appeared in print in the school annual Magazine on 1959. He studied in St. Aloysius College Institutions until he obtained a Degree in Commerce in 1973.

His first full length novel "Nimanni Xeli" (The Last Lamb) was accepted and serialized by late J.S. Alvares in his fortnightly, "Jhelo"in 1964. He went to Kuwait, worked for 16 years in the Oil Sector. He married Jane Lobo in 1975. Along with his wife and the only child, Ruth Esther. He widely traveled visiting Greece, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, England, Bangkok, Singapore, Egypt and Bahrain during Edwin's stint in the Middle East, meeting different cultures and people.

Edwin published 33 novels, earning 9 literary awards, a Konkani film script to his credit is a Member of the General Council (2008-2012) of the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, an active Rotarian, Executive Director of the Institute of Konkani, St. Aloysius College, Mangalore and edits "Amar Konkani," a bi-annual literary research journal. He was the President of the 11th All India Konkani Sahithya Sammelan 1992 in Karwar, Karnataka. He has translated many of his own Konkani short stories into English and one such, "A Cup of Hot Coffee" is published by Shri Khuswant Singh in "Our Favorite Indian Short Stories"; a recent addition to his credit is the short story "Chocolates" published in a special addition of Reader's Digest.
