Mangalore: While the whole India is celebrating unparalleled performance of Indian teams bagging 3 gold medals in Men’s, Women’s and overall in the chess Olympiad, Mangalore celebrated another rare feat- a Mangalore origin girl excelled at Olympiad.
Derik’s Chess School student Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Sana Omprakash Kayyar an Indian origin girl represented Uganda women’s team in the Olympiad. Sana scored a very impressive score of 6.5 points in 9 rounds. With this brave performance she will also be conferred Woman FIDE Master title.
Sana is the first East African woman player to cross FIDE elo rating 1900 in the standard format.
16-year-old Sana is now the top woman player of Uganda.
Her journey from a young chess enthusiast during the COVID-19 lockdown to an international competitor in one of chess's most prestigious tournaments is inspiring the Mangalore chess
fraternity and beyond.
In the 2022, she won silver medal in the African Youth Chess Championship in Zambia in Under 14 girls category. This stellar performance qualified her for the World youth chess championship and also earned her WCM title.
Sana is the most hardworking dedicated talent we have seen in recent years. She considers World Champion Jose Raul Capablanca as her idol and wants to conquer the world with her chess talent. The unwavering support of her parents, Omprakash Kayyar (Country Head, ETG Uganda) and Saritha Omprakash Kayyar, has been instrumental in nurturing her talent.
We at Derik’s Chess School heartily congratulate her and wish her many more success in her endeavours.
