Fr. Walter was born on April 30, 1959 to Louis and Celine Saldanha in Kirem in the diocese of Mangalore. He had the initial formation at St. Paul’s Minor Seminary, Lucknow and the Major Seminary studies at St. Charles, Nagpur. He was ordained to the priesthood on April 05, 1987 by Most Rev. Dr. Alan De Lastic, the then Bishop of Lucknow.
In the first year of his priesthood, he was assigned at St. Paul’s Church, Shahjahanpur as an assistant parish priest and vice principal and later he served at Bareilly, Kashipur, Bhowali, Puranpur, Khatima, Poliganj, Dhamola, and Nausar as parish priest, principal and manager. From 1999-2003 he was the diocesan youth director.
He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer stage IV, on April 20, 2022. He was 63 years old and had dedicated thirty-five years of his priestly life for Lucknow and Bareilly dioceses.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Remedies Church, Kirem, in Karnataka on Thursday 6 October 2022 at 3 p.m. Internment will take place at the parish cemetery, immediately following the funeral Mass.
