New Delhi, Dec 11: Rajya Sabha member Sudha Murthy has urged the central government to make singing Vande Mataram mandatory in schools.

Speaking in a debate in the Rajya Sabha on the occasion of the completion of 150 years of the composition of Vande Mataram, Sudha Murthy called the Vande Mataram song a formula that unites the country. She urged the government to make singing the national anthem 'Vande Mataram' mandatory in primary and high schools.
I am not standing here as an MP, a philanthropist or a writer. I am standing here as a daughter of Mother India or Mother India, she said.
Every state in India is like a piece of colorful cloth. The thread and needle that weaves all those pieces together is this Vande Mataram song. It is not just a map or a flag, it is a concept that considers the earth as the motherland. This is not just a piece of land, this is motherland,' Sudha Murthy described.
We teach the national anthem Janagana Mana to school children in all states. But, what is the reason for not singing Vande Mataram? She questioned, it may take one to three minutes to teach the Vande Mataram song to children. But, why are we not taking the initiative to teach the song?. If this behavior continues, one day our children will forget the Vande Mataram song while singing it. They will forget the lyrics. They will lose the entire text, she expressed concern.
