Mangalore September 15: Water is the most valuable natural resource for life. Although much of the land is covered by water, there is very little water for use. Therefore, the Department of Horticulture has implemented a micro irrigation program under the Prime Minister's Krashi-Chinchayi scheme in order to facilitate the economy of the farmers in order to obtain high quality yields using the natural water available in moderation. Under this scheme, farmers can get up to 2 hectares of land. 90 per cent subsidy is being provided by the department.
Chandrawathi, a resident of Pettampady village in Puttur taluk, contacted the Horticulture Department officials on the issue of water management, the problem of hired workers and inquired about irrigation. Drip irrigation is applied to about 0.3 hectare nut area under the guidance of the department. She has been paid a subsidy under the Prime Minister's Krashi-Chinchayi scheme.
"Low cost, moderate water consumption, crop management and high income is only farmers perspectives," says Chandravati. It is of opinion that in drip irrigation, watering the crop every day is equivalent to yielding the crop without excessive moisture.
