Physiotherapy services played a crucial role in ensuring athlete safety and sustaining performance during the All India Inter-University Athletics Championship 2025–26, currently underway at Moodubidire. A well-coordinated on-field support system comprising physiotherapists and medical professionals has been instrumental in managing injuries, preventing risks, and aiding recovery throughout the national-level event.

A dedicated team from Alva’s College of Physiotherapy, consisting of 15 physiotherapists and five staff of the college, has been deployed on the ground round the clock. The physiotherapy unit worked in close coordination with the on-site medical team to provide immediate care and advanced treatment whenever required.

Ms. Shakti, a postgraduate student of Alva’s Physiotherapy College, said her role involved assisting injured athletes and supporting senior physiotherapy staff. She explained that athletes were generally provided treatment for up to 15 minutes per session, with flexibility depending on the urgency and severity of injuries. This championship marked her first experience at a national-level sports event. She noted that national competitions are highly structured with systematic management and adequate facilities, unlike many state-level events where resources and support systems are limited. According to her, the most common injuries observed during the championship included muscle strains, quadriceps injuries, dehydration, and heat cramps. To minimize such occurrences, the physiotherapy team emphasized proper warm-up and cool-down exercises, along with adequate hydration before and during competitions.

Immediate injury management on the field included first aid, rehydration, and ice application. Injuries were classified into Grade 1 (mild), Grade 2 (moderate), and Grade 3 (severe) categories. Athletes with serious injuries were promptly referred to the Alva’s Health Center for further medical care.

Dr. Kshama Shetty, Principal of Alva’s College of Physiotherapy, Moodubidire said that the team’s primary focus was on warm-up support, injury prevention, and performance assistance. Warm-up sessions were designed to prepare athletes physically, reduce muscle stiffness, and prevent injuries. She explained that physiotherapy care was provided in three stages before, during, and after the events. Prior to competitions, athletes underwent physical assessments and were advised on preventive techniques. During events, continuous monitoring ensured that athletes could safely continue participation. Post-event care included stretching, relaxation techniques, pain management, and ultrasound therapy. Mild injuries were treated on the field itself, while severe cases were referred to the Health Center OPD, as such conditions required advanced medical intervention.

The sustained and coordinated efforts of the physiotherapy and medical teams have ensured timely care for athletes, significantly contributing to safety, recovery, and optimal performance throughout the All India Inter-University Athletics Championship 2025–26.
