Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha Leads Good Friday Liturgy at St Rita Church, Panja; Calls the Cross a Symbol of Hope

MANGALURU: The solemn liturgy of Good Friday, marking the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, was observed with deep devotion at St Rita Church, Panja. Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore, led the evening ceremony, drawing hundreds of faithful from the parish.

The service, which commemorates the passion and death of Christ, included the Prostration, the Reading of the Passion according to the Gospel of St John, the General Intercessions, the Adoration of the Holy Cross, and the Rite of Holy Communion.

In his poignant Reflection on the Passion of Christ, Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha emphasized the profound significance of the Cross in the life of a Christian. Reflecting on the theme, “The Cross: A Sign of God’s Love and Hope,” the Bishop remarked that the sacrifice of Jesus is the ultimate testament to how much God is willing to endure for humanity.

“When we face trials and tribulations, we must remember that the Lord is right beside us, ready to lift us up,” the Bishop stated. “The Cross is not a sign of defeat, but a beacon of new hope. Even in the moments of Christ’s death, we see the immense depth of the Father’s love and the Son’s total surrender.”

The Bishop further challenged the faithful to introspect on their own lives, asking what sacrifices they are willing to make for Christ in return. He urged the congregation not to be driven to despair by the hardships of life, noting that looking upon the crucified Jesus provides the strength to overcome any challenge.

Rev. Fr Melwyn John Dsouza, Parish Priest of St Rita Church, Panja, assisted in the solemn ceremony. The “Way of the Cross” was also observed earlier in the day, setting a prayerful atmosphere for the evening liturgy.
