IPL broadcast engineer dies after MI vs KKR match

Mumbai: Senior British-born broadcast engineer Ian Williams Langford (76), who was part of the live broadcast team for IPL 2026 matches, has died.

He was found dead after returning to his hotel room in Mumbai after the match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Background to the incident:

Ian Williams was involved in IPL broadcasting work on behalf of the BCCI. After completing his duties for the match between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night, March 29, he returned to the Trident Hotel in Nariman Point in south Mumbai. He had been staying in room number 2715 of the same hotel since March 24.

On Monday morning, March 30, when the hotel staff called Langford’s room, there was no response. When the suspicious staff opened the room using the master key, they found him lying unconscious on the floor.

The hotel doctor was immediately called, who confirmed Langford’s death. He was later taken to a hospital in Mumbai, where doctors officially declared him dead.

Police investigation and preliminary report:

A case of accidental death (ADR) has been registered at the Marine Drive police station in Mumbai.

No suspicious circumstances: According to the preliminary investigation, no abnormal or suspicious objects were found in the room.

Health issues: It is suspected that the 76-year-old Ian may have died due to age-related health problems or a heart attack.

Postmortem: The body has been sent for a postmortem to determine the exact cause of death.

Langford Career:

Ian Williams Langford was a technician with decades of experience in the field of sports broadcasting. His role was huge in maintaining the technical quality of major tournaments like the IPL. Now his death is considered an irreparable loss to the field of sports broadcasting.

The police have already informed the British Embassy about this death, and a message has been sent to his family members in this regard.
