Lower caste woman at fair fatally attacked, 2-month-old baby dies

Hyderabad: A two-month-old baby died after being attacked during a religious fair in Nagarkurnool, Telangana. Police have arrested three people in the case and the investigation is ongoing.

According to the police, during the ‘Kummera fair’ held in Kummera village of Nagarkurnool district, a dispute arose between a family belonging to the Chakli community and some people over temple entry. Although temple entry is usually free, the family was allegedly asked to pay Rs 100.

In a statement to the police, the complainant, Chilukeswaram Chandrakala, alleged that the family members were abused during the incident. He alleged that caste abuse was done against him. He alleged that his younger son Ganesh and other family members were beaten up.

During the incident, the family’s daughter-in-law Monica tried to save the child. But in the chaos, the child was seriously injured and later died. The family alleged that they were robbed of some jewellery and mobile phones and threatened with dire consequences if they returned to the village.

After the incident, the family fled to Nagarkurnool town. There, some organisations and local residents staged a protest demanding the arrest of the accused and action under stringent laws. Initially, a case was registered under sections related to suspicious death, assault and breach of peace, police said. Later, sections related to the SC/ST Act and attempt to murder were also added.
