Vijayapura: An earthquake of 2.9 magnitude was recorded in Vijayapura district on Wednesday. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre (KSNDMC) said that people do not need to panic as it is of low intensity.

The earthquake occurred at 07.43 am and the epicentre was found 2.5 km northwest of Hattarkihal village in Yaranal gram panchayat of Basavan Bagevadi taluk of Vijayapura district and at a depth of 05 km, the KSNDMC said in a statement.
'The intensity of the earthquake is low and tremors may have been felt up to 50-60 km from the epicentre of the earthquake. It said.
This type of earthquake does not cause any damage to the local community. Because, the intensity is low. However, the ground shaking may be felt. The epicenter of the earthquake falls in seismic zone III and according to the tectonic map, the area is free from any structural faults, it said.
