Avril’s love for books began long before she stepped into a classroom. Even as a little child who had not yet started schooling, she would spend hours gazing at books, pretending to read. The colourful illustrations and fascinating pictures captivated her imagination, prompting her to ask her parents to buy books for her.
Stories soon became an inseparable part of Avril’s childhood. She loved narrating tales and creating her own imaginative worlds. Her storytelling sessions often seemed endless, with listeners having to gently interrupt her and save the rest of the story for another time.
When Avril began school, the library quickly became her favourite place. Surrounded by countless books, she would often find herself immersed in a world of stories, unsure which book to pick first. Even among the toy shops in the marketplace, it was the bookstore that held a special place in her heart. Unlike many children who gravitated towards toys, Avril would happily spend her time selecting books to add to her collection.
Little did she know that this childhood fascination would eventually blossom into a remarkable literary achievement.
A Dream Takes Shape
Avril’s long-cherished dream of becoming an author began to take shape when she became a published co-author of A Motley Collection of Marvellous Stories, an anthology of short stories created under the Scholastic Writers Academy. Her story, Valerie Saves the Season, was featured in the collection, marking an important milestone in her writing journey.
Recognising her exceptional work, discipline and creativity, Avril was hand-picked for the Scholastic Writers Academy – Version 2.0, an advanced, invite-only programme designed to nurture and develop young writing talent. This selection marked another significant achievement, opening the door for her to pursue the journey towards becoming a solo published author.
Following a special mentoring programme, during which she worked closely with a Scholastic literary expert, Avril achieved another dream by authoring her own complete book, The Quest to Find the Luminous Rose, which was officially published by Scholastic.
A Unique Imagination Recognised
Avril’s mentors were impressed by her creativity and the imaginative world she created through her writing.
Describing her, one of her mentors remarked, “A quiet child, she might seem, but the glint of mischief in her eyes was unmistakable. Her unique story idea impressed me a lot.”
The mentor also praised the world Avril had woven into her story, describing it as “such a wonderful place to be” and calling it “a world of reconciliation” and “a fantastical adventure”.
These words reflect the originality of Avril’s imagination and the promise she holds as a young storyteller.
Balancing Academics and Creativity
Avril’s remarkable accomplishments have brought immense pride and happiness to her parents, schoolteachers, family and friends, who have congratulated her on her achievements and encouraged her to continue exploring her literary talents.
Despite her academic commitments, Avril continues to make time for creative writing. She is currently working on her next project, a fantasy novel that promises to take readers into another imaginative world.
For Avril, academic excellence remains just as important as creative achievement. She believes that students must give priority to their education, regardless of their talents in other fields. In her view, knowledge is a form of wealth that no one can take away.
With her passion for storytelling, dedication to learning and determination to grow as a writer, Avril aspires to become a successful author. Her journey from a little girl fascinated by colourful books to a young author whose work has been published by Scholastic is an inspiring reminder that childhood dreams can become reality when nurtured with imagination, discipline and perseverance.
As Avril continues to write and explore new literary horizons, her journey promises to be one to watch, and her well-wishers look forward to seeing many more stories emerge from her creative world.
