London, Oct 23: The ‘Kelmscott Chaucer,’ a book published in 1896, stands as one of the world’s rarest artistic creations. Recently, a highly rare copy of this book made headlines by selling for approximately Rs.2.68 crore. In terms of design, printing, and craftsmanship, it represents a significant milestone in the literary world.

A Long Journey of Printing and Production:
Work on this book began several years prior to its release. The printing process officially commenced in August 1894, and the book was finally published and distributed in June 1896. It was one of the most ambitious projects undertaken by William Morris’s ‘Kelmscott Press’ in Hammersmith, London. Influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, Morris firmly believed that books should not merely serve as a medium for literature, but should also be crafted as objects of aesthetic beauty.
Pigskin Binding and Artistic Design:
Another key feature of this valuable book is its binding; it is bound in pigskin. Inspired by German bookbinding traditions, this binding—featuring a distinctive ‘pig-tail’ style—embodies the craftsmanship associated with the ‘Doves Bindery.’ A special protective box is also provided for the book. The covers are adorned with intricate carvings of vine patterns, roses, lilies, and oak leaves, and the binding is secured with two metal clasps. Furthermore, the book is printed in a striking combination of black and red ink.
87 Magnificent Woodcuts:
Another notable feature of this book is the inclusion of 87 large woodcuts. These illustrations were created by Burne-Jones, an artistic collaborator of Morris. They were reproduced by Robert Catterson-Smith and carved into wood by W. H. Hooper. Additionally, Morris himself designed the book’s decorative borders, lettering, and title page, lending the volume a unique and regal appearance.
A Rarity of Only 50 Copies:
Only 50 copies of this precious ‘Kelmscott Chaucer’ were ever printed and produced. This book, one of a very rare and limited number of copies, captured the attention of literature enthusiasts and collectors when it sold for a staggering 2.68 million in October 2026.
