Farmers to have farmer identity card to buy urea

Shivamogga, April 07: Farmers will now have to have a farmer identity card (FID) to buy urea fertilizer, Joint Director of Agriculture Kiran Kumar said.

The new rule will come into effect from the 2026-27 Kharif season. Kumar said the move is aimed at bringing transparency in fertilizer distribution and curbing black market sales.

Under this system, fertilizer will be distributed through the K-Kisan software based on the size of each farmer’s land holding and crop. It will be ensured that only the required quantity is distributed.

Farmers who do not yet have a farmer identity card have been asked to visit their nearest Raitha Sampark Kendra, Horticulture Department office or Common Service Centre to register with their pahani (land records), bank passbook and Aadhaar card.

Those who already have an FID can link all their survey numbers to it. Licensed fertilizer dealers are required to enter the farmer’s FID in the K-Kisan software before completing any sale, it said. Retailers will also have to update all their O-Form registrations.

Kumar warned that the licenses of traders who sell fertilizers without O-Form registration, charge more than the permitted price or supply fertilizers for non-agricultural purposes will be cancelled.
