Man arrested for entering Delhi Assembly, placing bouquet inside

New Delhi: A man has been arrested in a case where a car driven by a masked man forced its way through one of the boundary gates of the Delhi Assembly premises on Monday afternoon.

The car fled the scene, leaving the security forces in the capital reeling. However, after a few hours of intensive search operations, the man was arrested and the car was seized. The man has been identified as Sarabjit Singh and the car was found in Roop Nagar, a densely populated residential area in north Delhi.

The incident comes after bomb threats were received at the Assembly during the recently concluded Budget Session. The car, which had a Uttar Pradesh registration number, broke through Gate No. 2 and entered the Assembly premises at around 2 pm and then escaped.

As soon as he crossed the barricade, the driver stopped the vehicle abruptly, calmly got out of the car, placed a bouquet of flowers near the gate and got back into the vehicle and drove away. “The driver then went towards the office of Assembly Speaker Vijayendra Gupta, placed the bouquet of flowers near the gate and returned,” an official from the Delhi Secretariat said.

The driver also threw soot on the Speaker’s car, they said. A bomb disposal squad team rushed to the spot and officials said no explosive or suspicious material was found in the bouquet so far.
