New Delhi, February 4: Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan on Monday accused the Uttar Pradesh government of mishandling the situation at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, alleging that the river water has been contaminated due to the bodies of victims from the recent stampede being thrown into it.
Bachchan stated that the Yogi Adityanath-led government had failed to make proper arrangements for the common people attending the event. "The water is most polluted at the Kumbh Mela. It has been contaminated by the bodies of those who died in the stampede. The real issues are not being addressed, and the common people are not getting any special facilities. There are no arrangements for them," she said, speaking to reporters outside Parliament.
She also claimed that there was a cover-up regarding the stampede that occurred on January 29, which resulted in the deaths of 30 people and injuries to 60 others. Bachchan alleged that no post-mortem examinations were conducted on the deceased.
“The same water is reaching the people there. The BJP government is not providing any explanation for this. There is a complete cover-up,” she added.
Bachchan further criticized the government for making misleading statements about the number of people who attended the Kumbh Mela, questioning how such a large number of people could gather at one place at the same time. She also referenced accusations from several leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who have alleged that the Uttar Pradesh government is hiding the true number of deaths in the stampede. These leaders have called for a parliamentary debate on the issue.
