Udupi: Students, old students, school management of the Government First Grade College, Hebri near here have opposed to construct a Mini-Vidhan Soudha on the college grounds.

Addressing media persons during the press meet held at Udupi Press Club . President of Student Welfare Council of the College, Sumanth Shetty said that if the government not drop to proposed construction of Mini-Vidhan Soudha, students will launch agitation severely.

Sumanth Shetty said that presently there are 485 students are studying in the college. This academic year we have increased 85 students. The college management has now planning to start some other courses in the college. Hence, there would be not fair to construct a mini vidhan soudha in the college premises.

There was near about 31 acres of land which presently had 25 acres and 12 cents of land with it. Already plans had been drawn up to construct a students' hostel, a library, an indoor stadium, a 400 meter track and other facilities on this land. But the government was planning to construct a mini vidhan soudha on 5 acres of this land. The construction of the said building would affect the development plans of the college. Students would be distracted by needless political agitations, he said.

He said that near the bus station, presently the taluk office at Hebri functions from the Old Community Health Centre building on 2 acres of land. Mini Vidhana Soudha could be built on this 2 acres of land as people can easily approach it.

Shetty said that a couple of years ago, the district administration had identified 11.35 acres of land at nearby Chara village for the construction of the Mini Vidhana Soudha. The government can select between these two sites or can look for any other place.

He said that we are not against of construct of a Mini Vidhana Soudha in Hebri, but not on the college campus building. We request the government land allotted to the college in 1988 should not be touched.

Sridhar Shetty, a social worker said that we have given a notice on this matter to the local MLA Sunil Kumar. He said at that time that he will look into the matter not to construct a mini vidhan soudha in college land. But he spoke negatively in other places that the government will construct said building in college land.

The students leaders said that if the government goes ahead with its plan of constructing a Mini Vidhan Soudha in College land, we will launch an agitation with the help of old students and others.

Hemanth Shetty, Akshay Naik, Girish, Vijay, Suraj and other students were present during the press meet.
