Landslide fears in Sringeri too – Huge barrier wall cracked

Chikkamagaluru, July 09: Cracks have appeared in the huge barrier wall built in front of the Sringeri taluk office in the district, and there is a fear that the barrier wall will completely collapse due to heavy rain. The crack in the barrier wall is increasing by the minute. There are 4 houses and more than 18 shops below it, and if the barrier wall collapses, the Bhadra river will be flooded.

Fears are increasing by the minute

The crack in this huge barrier wall, which is about 50 feet high and 120 feet wide, is increasing by the minute. Since it is the current rainy season, there is a risk that the barrier wall will completely collapse if the rain increases further. If this disaster occurs, the houses and shops under the barrier will be directly submerged in the Bhadra River. Since it is on the main route to Sringeri Sharada Mutt, there is continuous public traffic, and fear has started.

Poor work revealed in a few months

This new barrier was built at a cost of about Rs 2 crore at the same place that collapsed during the last 2024 monsoon. However, within just a few months of the completion of the work, the barrier has completely cracked. Locals have expressed their anger that the poor work done by filling the inside of the wall with only soil is the reason. The public is also angry that the district administration has not taken any precautionary measures so far.

Inspection by a team led by former minister DN Jeevaraj

A team of BJP leaders led by former minister DN Jeevaraj visited the site and inspected it. Later, speaking to the media, he expressed his anger and said, “Despite spending crores of money, very poor work has been done by filling it with soil.” He urged the concerned authorities to immediately take action to protect the lives and property of the people in the vicinity.

What Tahsildar Anup said

This is what Tahsildar Anup said to TV9, “A crack has appeared in the barrier wall. We have instructed the shops and houses below to vacate. We will call a concern center from the taluk administration. We have instructed them to take precautionary measures. A team of experts is coming to Sringeri from Bengaluru and we will take their opinion and take further action,” he said.
