Bengaluru: Former Prime Minister H.D. Devegowda’s wife Channamma (85) has passed away. She was admitted to Manipal Hospital suffering from respiratory problems and was being treated in the ICU since July 15. However, she breathed her last today (July 18) as the treatment was not effective.


Chennamma was admitted to Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru due to respiratory problems. Specialist doctor Dr. Satyanarayana was treating Channamma. But she passed away without responding to treatment.
Channamma, who was the backbone of Devegowda
Channamma of Hirehalli in Muttige, Hassan taluk, was born on May 25, 1954, to H.D. She entered into married life with Devegowda. The couple has four sons and two daughters, H.D. Revanna, H.D. Balakrishna, H.D. Ramesh Gowda, H.D. Kumaraswamy, Shailaja and Anasuya. Channamma was the backbone of Devegowda’s political life, and she became a strong wife by managing the family so that Devegowda, who was always busy in politics, did not have to bear the burden of the family. Apart from raising six children, she was also responsible for their education and became an ideal housewife.
Channamma was attacked with acid!
In February 2001, Channamma was attacked with acid while she was returning from a temple in Haradanahalli. She was seriously injured in the incident and recovered after treatment. Channamma, the eldest daughter of Devegowda and Kalamma, had completed her education up to SSLC by that time. As the eldest daughter of the family, she was like a mother to her four brothers and three sisters.
