Varanasi: The much-awaited Sarnath site was conferred UNESCO World Heritage Site status at a ceremony held in Paris. It is a major global site in Uttar Pradesh. The ancient Buddhist site of Sarnath in Varanasi has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This was announced in Paris during the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
Sarnath holds immense historical significance in the context of Buddhism. It is the place where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermons. The Dhamek Stupa, an important Buddhist site located here, makes it even more significant. This stupa was built by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century.
